Here is some helpful information to get you started on your journey to becoming a tailwheel legend:
What is a tailwheel endorsement?
A tailwheel endorsement is an FAA-required sign-off that allows you to pilot tailwheel (conventional gear) airplanes. Per FAA rules (14 CFR 61.31), you must log specialized training and get an instructor’s endorsement in your logbook before flying a taildragger as pilot-in-command.
What are the minimum hours to obtain a tailwheel endorsement?
There is no minimum flight hour requirement to earn the endorsement, just demonstrated proficiency. Most pilots complete the training in about 7–12 hours of flight time – sometimes in a single weekend of focused flying! Your instructor will work at your pace until you’re completely comfortable on the controls. Our program focuses on safety and proficiency in aircraft, and the curriculum is tailored to ensuring you are well prepared to serve as pilot-in-command of a conventional gear airplane upon endorsement.
What are the benefits of obtaining a tailwheel endorsement?
Unlocking a tailwheel endorsement isn’t just about ticking a box – it opens up a world of benefits for your flying:
Serious Fun: Let’s face it – tailwheel flying is pure fun and a badge of airmanship pride. It connects you to the roots of aviation and tests your piloting in the best way. It’s an adventure that rekindles the joy of why you started flying in the first place.
Refined Stick-&-Rudder Skills: Tailwheel aircraft are less forgiving of sloppy technique, so they quickly sharpen your rudder and overall flying skills. You’ll become more precise and proactive on the controls – good habits that carry over to any airplane.
Boosted Confidence & Safety: Handling the lively quirks of a taildragger will make you a more capable, confident pilot. Many aviators find that after tailwheel training they’re better all-around pilots in every aircraft they fly.
Access to More Aircraft: From vintage Piper Cubs to modern bush planes, many fun aircraft are tailwheel. This endorsement lets you fly unique airplanes you otherwise couldn’t, expanding your aviation horizons. Ever dream of backcountry flying or landing on grass strips? Tailwheel skills make it possible.
What does it cost to obtain a tailwheel endorsement?
We believe in transparent, competitive pricing – an investment in quality flight training that won’t break the bank:
Tailwheel Aircraft Rental (Standard): $150 per hour. Fuel is included, so just focus on flying.
Flight Instruction: $75–$100 per hour (based on instructor). High-caliber coaching to fit your budget.
Our program includes an estimate of 5-7 hours of ground instruction, and 7-12 hours of flight time. The focus will be on your comfort with the aircraft, demonstrated proficiency, and safely operating as pilot-in-command. Our curriculum is designed to ensure you have the confidence to operate a tailwheel airplane upon endorsement.
The freedom to take to the skies and level up your flight skills… priceless!
